Empowering Homes: Utility Rebates Drive Energy Efficiency Upgrades

Columbia REA, along with other public power electrical utilities across the region, are increasing energy efficiency initiatives. These programs not only help reduce household energy consumption but also offer incentives to encourage homeowners to make sought-after upgrades. Starting in October, Columbia REA will increase rebates for key energy-saving measures, including HVAC systems, insulation, windows, and heat pump water heaters—making now an ideal time for homeowners to invest in efficiency.

1 of the most notable changes is the expansion of rebates for HVAC systems. Utilities like Columbia REA have updated their rebate structures to offer up to $1,560 for replacing electric forced air furnaces with variable-speed heat pumps, and up to $600 for Heat Pump upgrades.

These upgrades not only improve comfort but also deliver long-term savings by reducing electricity usage during peak heating and cooling seasons.

Insulation remains foundational to energy efficiency. According to the Department of Energy, properly installed insulation can reduce heating and cooling costs by up to 15%. Columbia REA offers rebates for attic, wall and crawl space insulation, which can mean as much as $2 per square foot returned to you.

Windows are another high-impact upgrade. ENERGY STAR®- certified windows and other high-efficiency windows not only enhance thermal performance but also reduce drafts and improve indoor comfort. Columbia REA will have increased rebates for window replacements, up to $10 per square foot.

Heat pump water heaters are gaining traction as a smart alternative to traditional electric models. These systems use ambient air to heat water, consuming significantly less energy. Columbia REA offers rebates for residential installations ranging from $1,400 to $2,200.

Also, if you make qualified energy-efficient improvements to your home, you may qualify for a substantial tax credit. There could be some changes underway by the IRS, so please check with your tax professional first to determine if these are applicable to your situation, if the program is still active, or when it expires.
