Why Is Columbia REA Talking So Much About Electric Vehicles?

It’s no secret that consumer interest in electric vehicles (EVs) is growing, Columbia REA is providing information so that our members can make informed decisions when considering an EV purchase.

Why Does Columbia REA Have an EV?

We purchased our 2020 Nissan Leaf EV to continue research and development. Our EV and charging stations help us access key data and gain insights into how EVs operate and what infrastructure is needed to support them. We use our EV to help raise awareness and promote understanding of EV technologies.

Why Is Columbia REA Involved in EV Infrastructure Issues?

Electric utilities are planning to ensure they have the necessary electric infrastructure in place to meet future EV charging needs without jeopardizing the ability to keep reliable power flowing to our local homes and businesses. As your local energy provider, Columbia REA is available to advise and help our members and local businesses plan for the future.

Can I Charge My EV Using an Existing Outlet?

Yes, but it is slow. Most EV owners opt for a Level II 240V home charger, which is much quicker and provides much more range in a shorter charging period. Columbia REA has a special fast-charging station at our Walla Walla office parking lot, that can charge a car in less than an hour for a small fee. Those away from home appreciate the quick recharge they can get while traveling.

Will an EV Meet My Daily Driving Needs?

If you are like most Americans and drive an average of 30 miles a day, an EV should easily meet your daily needs. Our Nissan Leaf EV has over a 200-mile range.

What Kind of Incentives Are Available for EVs?

Columbia REA offers qualifying members incentives for the purchase and the installation of a Level II charger. Check our webpage for more information.

Should I Let My Co-Op Know if I Purchase an EV?

As more of our members buy EVs, it’s helpful to know where they’re located in our area so we can ensure we have the necessary infrastructure in place to meet charging needs and provide reliable power to our local homes and businesses.

We understand making the switch to an EV is a big decision. Whether you’re ready to make an EV purchase or wondering if an EV can meet your daily driving needs, we’re here to help you make an informed decision.
