Spring Cleaning? Don’t Forget the Filters

I love this time of year—milder temperatures make life easier, keep electric bills low, and give our heating and cooling systems a break. Still, scheduling an HVAC check before the summer cooling season is a smart move; it can catch small issues before they turn into expensive repairs.

One simple task everyone can do every few months is to inspect, clean, or replace air filters. Filters are inexpensive and easy to swap, and a clogged filter can increase energy use and strain your equipment— sometimes leading to premature failure. Dirty filters can also worsen allergy symptoms.

You can also review your thermostat settings to make sure your home stays comfortable when you’re there and saves energy when you’re away. If you’re using an older thermostat, you may qualify for a smart thermostat through a rebate. Go to www.columbiarea.coop for more information.

If you’re not sure how to do these tasks, a contractor or local HVAC professional can walk you through them. We also maintain an approved contractor list (columbiarea.coop/contractor).

When you schedule professional service, a typical HVAC maintenance visit may include the following items (performed by licensed professionals only):

  • Check electrical connections and measure voltage and current on motors.
  • Inspect the condensate drain for your central air conditioner, furnace, and/or heat pump.
  • Verify the start-up cycle to ensure the system starts, runs, and shuts off properly.
  • Clean evaporator and condenser coils. Dirty coils reduce cooling performance, can increase run time and energy costs, and may shorten equipment life.
  • Check the refrigerant level and adjust if needed.
  • Clean and adjust the blower fan and duct components to support proper airflow and improve comfort.

Following these general tips, and most importantly, your contractor’s recommendations for your specific system, can help your equipment last longer, reduce energy use, and minimize the chance of a costly breakdown during the hottest part of the year.
